History, Theory and Foundations of Play Therapy

Designed to provide basic understanding of play therapy as an appropriate mental health intervention with children. Includes major approaches, stages in play therapy process and the role and responsibility of the therapist. Special issues to be addressed, some of which are precursors to other workshop offerings. An historical perspective relative to the origins, contributions of the giants in the field and the early use of play therapy will be included.

Child-Centered Play Therapy,
Mary Ortwein, MSW, LMFT
This training will introduce the entire play therapy process from start to finish, including making skilled responses, identifying therapeutic themes, tracking progress and making decisions surrounding intrepretations of sessions. Selection of toys, setting up the play room and including parents will be presented. This is probably the most important play therapy training that should not be missed!

Use of Art for Adults in Therapy.

Adults benefit from use of art in therapy much like children, but with a different approach. The history of art will be discussed. Teaching Social Skills Using Play-Based Techniques and Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Some skills are best learned among peer in a group setting, such as social cues, facial expressions, joining a group, meeting and keeping friends, all about boundaries, managing uncomfortable feelings, including anger, respect for self and others, and taking responsibility for thoughts, feelings and actions. Art, yoga, and social skills curriculum will be included.

Parenting Skills for Play Therapists, Strategies that work!(Does not count toward RPT hours)

Parents call on their pediatricians when children are out of control. Pediatricians then refer the parent to the therapists for answers. Therefore, therapists need to be well equipped with strategies to help parents who are often desperate to deal effectively with children who are out of control. This workshop will present Adlerian approach to parenting and will include the Crucial Cs, which are: Connect, Count, Capable and Courage.

Guidelines and Techniques of Art Therapy with Traumatized Children in Play Therapy

This workshop will focus on the ethical and clinical guidelines of art therapy assessment and treatment as used by the play therapist. Focus will be on sexually traumatized children in addition to other populations. Appropriate art therapy techniques will be demonstrated and participants will engage in hands-on activities. Case histories and client artwork will be presented. This workshop provides an outstanding foundation for the clinical application of art therapy in play therapy modalities.

Introduction to Sandtray Therapy

Part 1: Participants will learn about the history and therapeutic value of sandtray play therapy, then build and hold sandtray. Participants will learn and practice the non-directive approach to conducting a sandtray session. Practical concerns about documentation and how to set up a sandtray space will be covered.
Part 2: Intended as a counterpart to Introduction to Sandtray, Part I, this workshop will explore the vital components of sandtray in greater depth. Participants will learn about the significance of symbol and myth, as well as, practitioner self-awareness in the sandtray process. Participants will engage in experiential sandtray exercises designed to highlight these key elements. (Required for future sandtray workshops.)

Sandtray Therapy with Adults

Using sandtray with adults can be a deeply meaningful experience for client and clinician, and it is complementary to traditional therapeutic approaches used with this population. Practical concerns about engaging adults in sandtray, as well as, using the sandtray modality in both directive and non-directive approaches will be presented, and participants will have the opportunity to practice these techniques using the sandtray. (Introduction to Sandtray Therapy is a pre-requisite for this workshop.)
CANCELLATION POLICY: If you are not able to attend a seminar at least 10 working days prior to the seminar, written cancellation notice must be received in our office to receive a refund or credit. $10.00 is retained for processing. If you are not able to attend a seminar and have canceled within the time frame, you can have someone else take your place in the seminar or request a voucher to attend a different seminar. If you do not cancel in advance, you will not receive a refund or credit. We reserve the right to reschedule or cancel a seminar due to low attendance and inclement weather. We also reserve the right to substitute faculty.
